5 Things That Make A Junior Black Belt

I’ve been away for a couple of days up-skilling my first aid qualifications. I left my instructors in charge of my club including our Junior Black Belts.

I felt compelled to write this after hearing that a student said to one of my Junior Black Belts “You’re Not A Real Black Belt”.

Well for those that open their mouth before engaging their brain here are 5 things that make a Junior Black Belt:

1. DEDICATION

Did you know that most of our Black Belts complete on average 1000 hours of training to get their black belt and train at lest twice a week.

2. RESPECT

All of our Junior Black Belts not only have respect for Jiu-Jitsu but respect for everyone who steps onto the mat. This is an unconscious state of mind and treat everyone the same.

3. SUPPORT

They are the first ones through the door. They are the first ones to support me. They are the first ones to help others even if it means that don’t get as much time to practice their own techniques.

4. THEY’RE THE BEGINNING

I’m a 5 Dan Black Belt. When I was 12 (3rd March 1990) I passed my Junior Black Belt and spent the next 5 years helping my Sensei teach other junior students. I learnt so much from this….

You see our Junior Black Belts will be the ones who go through life helping others, looking for ways to constantly improve.

I’m sure that no-one would question my knowledge or credentials. The funny thing is that this started on 3rd March 1990.

5. THEY’RE 1 IN 10,000

Only 1 student out of 10,000 that start a martial art actually go the distance to obtain their Black Belt. They are unique and gifted individuals. I know the dedication, respect and support it takes to get there.

To all my Junior Black Belts rest assured you will always have the full support of not only the IJJA but also myself…

And for those who question the character of my Sensei’s. They should be asking themselves whether the IJJA is the right place for them. Oh and don’t be surprised if the next time you train they simply walk away to teach other students who value what they have to offer.

Thank you to all our Black Belts (past and present)!

Without you, the IJJA wouldn’t exist…

If you have read this and think you have what it takes to be and IJJA Black Belt.
